Today’s Inspiration To Brighten Your Day…
I’ve been busy helping my daughter move into her new apartment in the up and coming London Fields area of East London this week.
I walked with her to her work this morning along the canal and walking back towards Broadway Market to get myself some breakfast, I began to notice how everyone amongst the many joggers, walkers and cyclists along the canal path avoid eye contact, preferring to stay disconnected in their own isolation.
Perhaps you are one of my many subscribers here who suffers with social anxiety and if this is you… I want you to know that the biggest hurdle to overcoming social anxiety is in keeping yourself disconnected from others.
When you avoid connection you validate a belief that there is something to fear in reaching out to others and social anxiety grips you deeper.
It’s easy to feel alone in London, like any big city. Endless hours of disconnection everyday reinforces your sense of isolation and makes it harder for you to connect with others at times when you want to.
If you are looking to overcome social anxiety, follow these five simple steps…
- Challenge yourself today and make eye contact with someone.
- Then challenge yourself further and smile.
- Ask someone for the time.
- Ask another for directions, even if you know where you are going
- Go order a coffee or buy something in a local store and pick something random to comment on to the server so that you initiate a brief safe conversation.
Do this a few times in your day every day and by the end of the week, I guarantee you’ll be feeling more confident within yourself, less alone and more connected within your community. You’ll be on your way to giving social anxiety the boot for good!
